As Much Asia or Africa as New England
Project Mentor: Kate Wellspring
Survey Description: This artist - scientist collaboration considered "Walden" as a natural history of Walden Woods, and took a skeptical view of the idea of "remoteness" at the site, whether in the 1840's or today. Inventories were made of the flora, fauna, and human artifacts at one heavily trafficked and one secluded park site, both with areas equal to the square footage of Thoreau's cabin, as a means of humorously exploring Thoreau's outlandish claims that he may as well be as far away from civilization as Asia or Africa when at Walden Pond.
